A Fresh Start for Your Copy
2025 is here and maybe you’re praying like me, that this year will throw us some calm, positive consistency and less of the hair raising, rollercoaster madness of the last couple of years.

But whether this is the year of steady growth or another year of wondering whether a supermarket chain is a better alternative to freelance life, this is the year you need to treat your copy as more than just words.

I’ll just say that again because it’s important. Your copy is more than just words; it’s your chance to connect, build trust, and bring your dream clients into your world. But if your website, blogs or socials haven’t been updated in a while, chances are you’re leaving money and opportunities on the table.

As a busy business owner, time is limited. Which is why these fixes are designed to be quick yet impactful - small copy updates that pack a punch. It’s time to make your copy work as hard as you do.

1: Refresh Your Headlines

Like it or not, headlines are a dealbreaker. They’re often the first thing your reader sees and within seconds they’ll choose whether to read more or scroll on by. If your headlines aren’t grabbing attention and making people curious, you could be losing potential clients before they even get to know you. Here’s how to fix that:

Quick tips for better headlines:
• Clear is the best policy. Forget trying to be mysterious or clever. Use clear, direct copy without jargon. A great headline tells your audience exactly what to expect and leaves no room for guesswork.
• Focus on the benefits for your reader. Speak directly to their desires and share the transformation they can expect.
• Use action-oriented language to make your audience feel something.

Example fix:
Swap ‘Big changes are coming!’ for ‘Ready to attract more clients? Start here.’
To inspire feeling try ‘Discover the secret to writing socials that sell’ or ‘Stop losing clients to confusing copy.’

Even small headline tweaks can make a world of difference. And you can change them as many times as you need to!

2: Crystal Clear Offers

When it comes to your services and what you offer, your audience should instantly understand three things; what you offer, how you help them and what they need to do next.

Confusion can lead to inaction so clarity is crucial. When writing your offers, keep this simple question in mind; what’s in it for me? When you write your copy and it answers that question for your reader, it’ll tell them how it makes their life better and the transformation they can expect.

Common issues to avoid:
• Overly complicated language that feels vague or 'corporate'. Buzzwords and jargon can easily create confusion.
• Focusing too much on what you do instead of how it benefits your reader. A list of tasks you complete is nothing compared to the transformation you’ll create for them.

Example fix:
Replace 'Strategic planning and execution services' with 'I create a clear plan to help you attract clients and grow your income.'

Read through your services and offers and check if they answer the golden question ‘What’s in it for me?"

3: Clear Calls to Action (CTAs)

Calls to action (CTAs) are the statements that guide your reader to take the next step toward working with you. But let’s be honest, a lot of us hold back when writing CTA’s.

Maybe it’s being scared of appearing salesy or pushy so we water them down and lose their impact. The result? CTA's that feel generic, vague, or even non-existent. But here’s the thing, a warm and clear CTA isn’t pushy – it’s helpful. It’s a way of saying, 'here’s how I can help, and here’s how we can get started.'

Quick tips for CTA's:
• Use friendly, approachable language.
• Be clear and specific.
• Include a CTA on every piece of copy you write, don’t make your reader guess their next step.

Example fix:
Instead of 'learn more', try 'find out how we can work together' or 'let’s plan your dream website today.'

4: Update your About page

Is your About page about your or about your clients? If it’s a list of your qualifications or a long-winded career history, it’s time to re-write it! Your About page is your opportunity to connect with your clients by showing your authority, empathy, solutions and transformations.

Using the power of storytelling on your About page is a great way to draw them in and make them realise that you understand them and whether they feel a connection to your story and approach.

Quick tips for a stronger About page:
• Start by addressing your audience and their needs, not just talking about yourself.
• Share a snippet of your story to show relatability.
• End with an invitation to connect (your CTA goes here!).

Example fix:
Replace 'Hi, I’m Sarah, a life coach with 5 years of experience in...' for 'Hi, I’m Sarah! I work with female business owners like you who are ready to create a life filled with purpose, confidence and joy.'

5. Streamline Your Sentences

Less is more when it comes to your copy. Long-winded sentences can confuse or bore your reader and dilute your message. And in a world where people skim read and have super short attention spans, you need to get your message across quickly and clearly.

Quick tips for streamlining sentences:
• Avoid filler words like 'that,' 'really' or 'very.'
• Break up lengthy sentences into shorter ones - if you've got two commas in a sentence, chances are it's too long.
• Aim for short, snappy sentences that pack a punch.

Example fix:
Instead of 'I believe that by working together we can create a message that really resonates with your ideal client, helping them to take action and increasing your business success overall.' try this: 'Together, we’ll craft a message that resonates with your dream clients and inspires them to take action.'

Streamlining your sentences ensures your message is easy to read and keeps your audience focused.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Your copy is more than just words, it’s the first impression of your business whether it’s on socials, your website or brochures.

Your copy is how you share your story, show your values, and create connection. By making these five quick fixes, you’re not just improving your words, you’re creating a solid foundation for greater success throughout 2025.

And if you’re starting to feel overwhelmed because you hate writing? Don’t panic! Your copy doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to sound like you - people want to see the real, authentic you. When your words sound like you, your message is simple and clear, you’ll attract the clients who truly align with what you offer.

Which of these fixes will you try first?
